Year 1 Autymn 2018

Blwyddyn 1 Hydref 2018

Dear Parents,

I am delighted to welcome you and your child into Year 1. We have a very exciting term ahead learning all about traditional tales in our topic “Pop Up”. We are extremely lucky this term as Year 1 will be taking part in the Arts Council of Wales’ Lead Creative Schools scheme. We will have the opporttunity to work with a creative practitioner – more information about this later!

The following is some information you will find useful.

Snack money

All children are given fruit at morning playtime, and so we ask for snack money of £1 a week. This can be paid weekly on a Monday, or half termly if you prefer. Please put the money in a named envelope and or send it in with your child. In Year 1 we like to encourage independence, so we ask children to make sure they give us any notes or money from home. We do not check their bags daily.

PE Kits

PE is on a Monday and a Wednesday. PE kits should be kept in school in a named bag. Please send these in as soon as possible if you haven’t already done so. All children should have a change of clothes for PE – t shirt and shorts, and a pair of daps in case we go outside.

Water bottles

Children have access to drinking water throughout the day and we encourage them to bring their own water bottle. Again this needs to be named, and it will be kept in a box in our practical area. In addition to this all children are offered a drink of milk at morning playtime.

Reading Books

Reading books will be sent home on a the day your child reads to me. They need to be returned on the same day each week. The day will be clearly marked on your child’s reading folder. Please listen to your child read as often as possible, little and often is the best way to help. Use the record book to comment on their progress. As well as reading the books you can find other ideas to support your child in the back of the books or online at https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/

Homework and Spelling Practice

Homework will usually be a maths activity and will be sent home on a Friday. This should be returned on a Thursday. The homework is not designed to stretch or challenge your child, but rather to give them an opportunity to revise the learning from the week and to practise skils learned independently. It shouldn’y take more than 15 mins each week. Your child will also bring home a small book containing their spelling words to practise each week. We have a small spelling test every Thursday of the words they have been practising that week.

One last note – please can you make sure that every item of clothing, bags, lunchboxes and water bottles is named. We have a huge amount of lost property and this can cause distress to all concerned. We will do our best to encourage your child to look after their property, but having items labelled with their name makes this an awful lot easier!  Any unnamed and unclaimed items will be disposed of .

If you have any queries please do call in to the office to arrange a time to speak to me. I look forward to meeting you all, and to a fantastic year with your children.

Best wishes ,

Mrs C. Bawler
